Dan Hutcheson has a conversation with Gary Patton, from GLOBALFOUNDRIES where he’s CTO and head of Worldwide R&D, about how the integration has been going and how they have hit the ground running. Gary’s one of the most respected technology leaders in the world, having brought multiple generations of chip nodes to production at the head of IBM’s Semiconductor Research and Development Center. Now he’s in the middle of their 22nm FD-SOI launch as well as 14nm finFET. Dan and Gary cover a lot of ground: There is the integration of the IBM acquisition; as well as the ASICs, and RF, Analog, and Mixed Signal business that came with it. Plus there’s a rich team of technical talent that came over, not to mention 14nm’s production status, as well as their roadmap for 10 and 7nm. But the most important new thing to talk about is their new 22nm FDSOI process. It looks to be a real game changer and GF is the only foundry with it. We find out why and what it does that finFET and ordinary planar processes can’t.

GLOBALFOUNDRIES, the world's first full-service semiconductor foundry with a truly global manufacturing and technology footprint, is executing its Vision to reshape the semiconductor industry through collaboration and innovation.
Launched in March 2009 through a partnership between AMD and the Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC), now Mubadala Technology, GLOBALFOUNDRIES provides a unique combination of advanced technology, manufacturing excellence and global operations. With the integration of Chartered Semiconductor in January 2010 and IBM Microelectronics Division in 2015, GLOBALFOUNDRIES significantly expanded its capacity, as well as added differentiated ASIC and RF capabilities and ability to provide best-in-class foundry services from mainstream to the leading edge.
GLOBALFOUNDRIES is based in Silicon Valley with manufacturing operations in Dresden, Germany; Malta and East Fishkill New York, Vermont and Singapore. These sites are supported by a global network of R&D, design enablement, and customer support operations in Singapore, China, Taiwan, Japan, the United States, Germany, India and the Netherlands.
With some 18,000 employees and more than 250 customers around the world, GLOBALFOUNDRIES has quickly differentiated itself through collaboration, both with technology partners and customers, to develop and produce the semiconductors that are changing the ways we live, work and play.
