April 17, 2019: VLSIresearch today released its report detailing the 2018 top 10 suppliers of probe cards to the semiconductor industry.
FormFactor, Technoprobe, Micronics Japan, JEM, and MPI Corp maintained their hold on the top 5 positions, However, Technoprobe continued their strong run of growth since 2016 and surpassed Micronics Japan for the first time to move up into second. Solid performances from Nidec SV TCL, Korea Instrument, and TSE secured the 6th, 7th, and 8th places respectively, while Will Technology and Microfriend rounded off the top 10.
Of the major suppliers, Technoprobe was the stand-out performer by outgrowing the market with a year- on-year growth of 26%. This growth, compounding on 45% growth the previous year, was the result of opening a new state-of-the art factory in September 2017, enabling Technoprobe to capitalise on their strong MEMS probe card technology.
Second-placed Technoprobe still has some way to go to catch up with the market leader FormFactor which continues its domination of the industry. Both companies are strong in MEMS probe cards and have benefited from the industry’s dependency on this technology to solve the problems posed by advanced applications, especially those requiring finer probe pitches.
The major Japanese probe card suppliers, Micronics Japan (3rd) and JEM (4th), also posted solid revenue growth, adding to the increasing market share dominance of the biggest 4 suppliers.
John West, Managing Director of VLSIresearch Europe commented: “The probe card industry continues to be a challenging business arena where the winners are able to balance the need to respond to fast- changing markets while investing at the right level to achieve the technical development required to meet future needs”.
