Semiconductor Supply-Demand Balance improved in the second quarter of 2016

 

 

VLSIresearch reported that the balance between supply and demand for semiconductors improved from Saturated in 1Q16 to a Balanced state in the second quarter in a recent edition of Semiconductor Analytics. The only deteriorating sector was DRAM, which fell from a Saturated state in the first quarter to a Glut in 2Q16, though VLSI did note that conditions had improved measurably more recently. NAND supply was in a state of Shortage, while IDM, and Foundry & Fabless both improved from Saturated to Balanced.

 

Excess caution by chip makers in the first quarter drove a cut back in supply. This combined with a replenishment of inventory by OEM electronic manufacturers erased the excess supply built up in the fourth quarter of 2015, according to VLSIresearch. NAND, where supply is well managed, improved the most, jumping from Loose in 1Q16 to a state of shortage in 2Q16. The state at IDMs shifted from Saturated to Balanced, as the graduation season boosted demand while data center demand remained hot. Foundry and Fabless benefited from high demand out of China and for the older nodes.
