Semiconductor WEEK: An overview of results and conclusions from recent reports at VLSI.Customer Satisfaction SurveyWhite Paper: Gigaphoton honored with first THE BEST awardChip Market Research ServicesIt’s a hot and sunny summer• Equipment demand is soaring across the board in 2021 and suppliers are shipping what they can make • Equipment growth in 2021 could have been higher than the 32% clip had it not been for the constraints in the supply chain • VLSI’s Chip Price Performance jumped higherSemiconductor AnalyticsLast Week in the Semiconductor Market:Semiconductor sales soared week/week, accelerating on a 16-week run of double-digit Y/Y gains. The IC weather was mixed, with a slight 0?F rise for the week. Focusing on NAND, Y/Y growth MA’s passed 25% last week, with growth approaching last year’s levels after a seasonal 1Q dip. Auto hit it out of the park with a triple-digit gain Y/Y last week. It was followed by DRAM and Analog & Power. NAND and Logic tied behind that. Semi Market results from last week: • Semiconductor Weather1 Report: The IC weather was mixed • Wafer Fab Production Levels: IC Wafer Fab continued to show the effect of capacity constraints• IC Supply-Demand2 Metrics: VLSI’s IC Supply/Demand indices Tight conditions held for the 8th week• Electronics Prices Trend continued to bottomThe Chip InsiderStrategy and Tactics: Government Handout? Electronic Prices: Weak or Strong? Long-Term Impact of the Chip Shortage. Who gets the blame? Is government aid to the semiconductor industry a handout? This is a question I keep getting asked. I do believe it is NOT a handout, given the funds are handled appropriately. Let’s see if you agree... The key to success is for government to be a catalyst for commerce, not a substitute. And the process varies. Sometimes you pay for something like a bridge or a fighter plane. Sometimes you fund it. The importance is that if the catalyst is enough to start a process of emergent behavior, business will do the rest once a fertile ground for it to take risks is there.Comments, Questions & Answers:Are Electronics Price Trends Weak or Strong? Hi Dan, Last week you wrote about electronics prices being weak, but in the Wall Street Journal wrote the opposite. What’s the difference? –There’s a big difference. It’s the difference between … What’s really interesting is the comment about component cost rises driving list prices up because it creates a supply-demand pressure front… The good news is that the semiconductor industry is not …Long-Term Impact of the Semiconductor Shortage? Dan, Do you think there will be long-term impacts of the Auto IC shortage? Will governments stay attentive to the importance of the semiconductor industry or will they fall back to sleep like they did after Japan’s threat subsided? Will there be a geopolitics of semiconductors? – The geopolitics of 19th Century was mostly about ... The 20th Century about ... the 21st Century would be control of the internet and semiconductor manufacturing… And all but one realized they were decades behind the game… That one was China, which saw it coming long before anyone else.
