The sun's still bright, but visibility remains limited
    • Order activity for semiconductor equipment fell by more than a point after hitting a yearly high the previous week
    • Equipment suppliers are ending the year with a lot of momentum and feel positive about the year ahead
    • Part of the optimism is driven by the rapid digital transformation of the economy, the 5G ramp, and the ongoing expansion in cloud computing
    • Uncertainties about the year ahead remain
      • A surge in COVID-19 cases in the U.S. and Europe will likely put a temporary damper on the economic recovery
      • China remains another area of concern for equipment suppliers with the blacklisting of SMIC and Tsinghua's recent default on a domestic bond issue
    • VLSI's Chip Price Performance Index declined a mere 0.1 points
      • DRAM flat
      • NAND declined
      • MPUs declined
    • Utilization rates remain at healthy levels
The sun's still bright, but visibility remains limited
