Order activity for semiconductor equipment remained red hot, jumping nearly a point to 87 degrees, a fresh new high for the year
Many chipmakers are scrambling for capacity as they grapple with intensifying shortages and persistent pressures from COVID-19 restraints on the supply chain
The ongoing shortages are driving ASPs higher and giving chipmakers' sales and profits a nice boost
The shortages will cause the high levels of volatility seen in 2020 to continue into 2021 and 2022
Double ordering, in particular, could become more prevalent as many customers are on allocation
VLSI's Chip Price Performance Index stayed hot

Utilization rates are running well above last year's levels
