System Level Test and how it's an ATE revolution: Advantest had an eye-opening session on SLT last month and it led me to think it may well be the next major revolution in test equipment. System Level Test has evolved for decades on the periphery of semiconductor test between device makers and system makers. The essential argument is test is becoming a more important enabler going forward versus its decades-long position as a cost center to be pushed down. What's changed is the increasing complexity of SOCs and SiPs, the introduction of advanced packaging, chiplets, and High-Bandwidth Memory on a horizontal vector. There's also a vertical reach from the depths of semiconductor manufacturing to the heights of the hyper-verticals that makes test a new value enabler for customers.
