John West of VLSIresearch Europe has a conversation with Dan Hutcheson about the impact the Coronavirus is having on the market for the Critical Subsystems that go into Semiconductor Equipment that are used to make ICs. The products are critical to the Semiconductor supply chain. However, Just-in-Time management systems were not designed to deal with a disruption as great as COVID-19. Especially in a market like this were there are many highly concentrated sub-markets that are critical links the chain needed to make semiconductor manufacturing equipment. John and Dan discuss what he’s hearing about order strength, what’s deemed essential by local governments, and what’s operational. John also predicts the permanent changes that the coronavirus is likely to bring in supply chain management. For example how Just-in-Time will take a back seat to JUST-in-CASE.
